Sandbagger Explained

“The goal of the race is to have an enjoyable day with like-minded people who are interested in a borderline crazy but a fun, hard workout followed by food, drink, meeting new people and catching up with old friends.”

The Annual Sandbagger is scheduled around Mid-September each year. The wild tri event includes, Biking, Swimming, and Running.

The Annual Sandbagger will include:

Sandbagger Triathlon – Plan for ~3 hours total (20min/130min/30min)

Gravel Bike Race (Pint) – Plan for ~4 hours or approximately 70 miles

Gravel Bike Race (Half Pint) – Plan for ~3 hours or approximately 50 miles

Gravel Team Bike Race (2 Pint) - Plan for -3 hours or approximately 75 miles

ALL of the biking and running will be on the incredible GRAVEL in and around Linn County, Kansas. The swimming will be done in the crazy warm spring fed, Sugar Lake.

The official governing body of the race is the Sandbagger Committee. The esteemed Committee is very prestigious, beyond reproach and has final determination on all Sandbagger matters including but not limited to handicaps, cheating violations, disqualifications and sentences of shame..

Sandbagger Fever

“Sandbagger is a non-stop, self supported, athletic event that utilizes the lakes, trails, gravel and dirt roads of rural Kansas.”

Simple General Sandbagger Rules

Riding with two people or in a group is acceptable. The Sandbagger Committee will handicap each team based on the strongest rider and will add an arbitrary time or distance penalty matching their mood for the day. The recorded finishing time will be when the last member of the team crosses the finish line..

Each participant is considered to be on a private excursion and remains solely responsible for any accidents in which he or she may be involved. No responsibility can be accepted for participants becoming lost, stranded, injured… or worse.

The course may have a limited number of course markings to reassure participants they are on route. DO NOT RELY ON COURSE MARKINGS FOR NAVIGATION. Participants will be expected to load the route into their GPS prior to the event.

The primary route must be followed at all times. No short cuts or alternate routes are permitted. The course may be altered in the event of inclement weather, or other unforeseeable circumstance.

Participants must wear a properly approved helmet while operating their bicycle. Participants must obey all city, county, and state laws, and “Rules of the Road”. You are completely on your own. Use your head. Watch for and yield to traffic. All roads are open to public traffic.

Drafting on another event participant IS allowed.

Team Race Sandbagger Rules

The long distance Sandbagger bike race has been a big hit for the previous several years but many have lamented how difficult and lonely it is to be in the belly of hell chasing fellow competitors for four hours.

In an effort to allow riders to ride together but still maintain the spirit of Sandbagger as a race, the Sandbagger Committee is excited to share that Sandbagger 2023 will have a Team Bike Race.

Each team may consist of 2 or 3 riders. Regardless if 2 or 3 riders are on a team, the team time will be recorded when the second biker crosses the finish line.

Each team will be handicapped by time and or distance by the irreproachable Sandbagger Committee.

When signing up for the Team Bike Race, please choose a team captain and team name. The Team Bike Race will be limited to 10 teams and riders should expect the race to be approximately 75 miles.
